Our Story

For nearly six decades, McLaughlin Consolidated Fishermen has been sourcing, handling and distributing the world’s freshest seafood for the good health and enjoyment of all Australians.

Established in the early 1960s as a family business under the banner of RF McLaughlin Pty Ltd, the business has grown, under the leadership of Malcolm McLaughlin, to be one of Australia’s largest seafood wholesalers.

In 1990, RF McLaughlin Pty Ltd forged a partnership with Consol Fish, a group of independent fishermen and cooperatives, to become McLaughlin Consolidated Fishermen Ltd. Today, the company is under the helm of Malcolm’s son and Managing Director, Andrew, along with son-in-law and Chief Operations Manager, Nathan White, who oversees day-to-day business activities.

Founded on strong values of integrity, service and quality, the brand is renowned for having a deep understanding of the diverse needs and preferences of its customers, as well as fairness and honesty in every business deal.

About Andrew McLaughlin

The family passion for seafood was alive and well in a young Andrew McLaughlin whose first foray into the industry was selling leftover seafood out of his little wagon to the neighbours in the 1980s.

Fast forward 30-plus years and today Andrew, now Managing Director, is carrying on the intergenerational tradition of strong family values while building an agile business that is responsive to changing customer needs, embraces innovation and complies with ever-changing resource management and government legislation.

Andrew oversaw the transition from the old market at Footscray Road to the new market at Kensington Road. He keeps abreast of industry trends around the world and constantly explores new markets in order to bring the most diverse array of seafood to customers. Appreciating professional fishing as an artform, Japan and Italy are firm favourites of Andrew’s because of the way seafood is embraced by people as an integral part of their everyday lives.

Sustainability and supplier relationships that deliver ongoing success are great motivators for Andrew.

About Malcolm McLaughlin

Since taking over the family business from father Ron in the mid-1960s, Malcolm McLaughlin has built the company over nearly six decades to become one of the largest and most trusted seafood wholesalers and exporters in Australia today.

Under Malcolm’s leadership, the business has embraced the many technological changes and cultural influences that have shaped the Australian seafood wholesaling industry. McLaughlin Consolidated Fishermen has always been at the forefront of these changes, particularly with regard to the handling and distribution of seafood.

Despite these many changes, Malcolm has ensured that the McLaughlin way of doing business has remained steadfast – fairness and integrity in every business deal and looking after staff so they, in turn, look after the customers.

About Nathan White

Nathan joined McLaughlin Consolidated Fishermen in 2004 as a Director and overseeing the daily business operations.

With a Bachelor of Applied Science in Agriculture and experience as an agronomist (agricultural scientist), Nathan well understood the process from paddock to plate in agriculture and upon starting in the seafood industry, sought the same level of understanding in all processes from sea to plate.

A large part of Nathan’s role is communicating with suppliers, staff and buyers to ensure each part of the business operates seamlessly. He enjoys the dynamic pace of the seafood market and the contact he has with the many and varied suppliers and customers, Australia-wide. Nathan has even learned to speak some Vietnamese – well, at least enough to get by in the busy market place!

Nathan supports the floor staff every morning, working where necessary to achieve good outcomes for McLaughlin’s and its suppliers.
